Dance
I bet you’ve got your hands covering your eyes, as you shake your head saying, “No, no, no, no, no.” You thought that giving singing a try was really going out on a limb, but dancing, DANCING, for goodness sake, is out of the question. (And then there are the seven of you who are jumping up and down because you love to dance and you know it’s good for you and now you have permission to do it more.)
Dancing is inherent to us, just as singing is. Human beings have been dancing since they stood upright. In fact, it’s probably why they stood upright. It’s hard to dance on all fours, particularly in pairs or groups. A circle dance on all fours would represent a major challenge. Anyway, I digress.
Dancing is joyful. It not only gives our minds a rest, it gives our bodies the opportunity to move. You may find pumping iron a joy or feel great spending forty-five minutes on the Stairmaster, but I submit that the joy to be found in dancing is different. It is a joy that bubbles up from the marrow of our bones and connects us as humans.Watch the faces of people who are not afraid to dance. There is a light that shines from them that I don’t believe you will ever see in a fitness center or at a road race.As dancers sweat, they smile. And their smiles are radiant.
I’m not talking about professional dancers. I’m talking about the folks down at the K of C hall at the corner doing country western dance and the people at the Town Hall doing the rumba and the couples downtown at the clubs moving freely around the floor.
Dancing
is a gift
you give
yourself.
